High voltage relates to anything that contains large amounts of electricity and in some industries refers to a voltage over a certain threshold. Usually, anything which has enough electrical potential dangerous enough to cause injury is known as high voltage.
Electrical power can be defined as either AC or DC. DC flows continuously in one direction whereas AC switches from positive to negative and vice versa multiple times a second.
British Standard BS 7671 “Requirements for Electrical Installations” defines high voltage as any voltage difference between conductors that is higher than 1000 volts AC or 1500 volts DC, or any voltage difference between a conductor and Earth that is higher than 600 volts AC or 900 volts DC.
If you have any equipment or conductors which require a high voltage, you will need specific safety requirements and procedures to be in place.
If you use high voltage electricity, then you will likely need an energy quote tailored to your specific energy needs and usage, rather than generate a comparison online. Rather than contact different energy suppliers and try and compare the quotes before they expire, we can manage this for you and send across a bespoke quote with the best rates we can find.

A half-hourly (HH) meter is a specialised type of energy meter that will take a reading every half an hour. The data is then automatically sent to your energy supplier using Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology, which allows your supplier to charge you more accurately due to them having a clearer picture of your energy usage throughout the day and eliminating the need for estimated billing.
The data is also accessible to you from your energy supplier if you have a half-hourly meter. This can provide some insight into your consumptions levels throughout the day and enable you to review how your business can reduce electricity use, either to run more efficiently or move certain production to “off-peak” times when the rates are lower.
It is currently compulsory for any business that consumes over 100kW of electricity to have a half-hourly meter. However, businesses who use over 70kW can opt in to have a half-hourly meter installed.
The easiest way to determine if your business has a half-hourly meter installed is by checking a recent energy bill. If you have a half-hourly meter the bill will contain an ‘S number’ and your 21-digit supply number will begin with ‘00’.
If you have a half-hourly meter then you will need a bespoke quote, as they are tailored to your specific energy use. Rather than go to multiple suppliers individually for a quote, you can email us at advice@energy-direct.co.uk and one of our experts will be in touch.
.
Our team of energy experts will work closely with you and multiple energy suppliers to find the best available tariff for your half-hourly meter, tailored specifically to your business. We handle the whole journey for you, to remove the stress of negotiating with suppliers and managing the switch.
That way, you can rest assured knowing your energy is in great hands and focus on the important aspects of running your business.
As the world population rises, so does the demand for energy. More and more people are becoming aware of their impact on the environment and “climate change” and ways to try and prevent it are becoming more popular.
A popular topic is ‘green energy’, but what exactly is it? Green energy or renewable energy is energy that does not pollute the environment. It comes from sources that can be naturally replenished (e.g. solar, hydro or wind) so unlike fossil fuels, they will not run out.
All businesses, large or small, can play their part in helping to tackle climate change by looking at switching to a “green energy” tariff to dramatically reduce their carbon footprint. This allows you to meet the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard where it can be matched to REGOs, allowing you to report zero emissions for “Scope 2” purchased electricity. “REGO” stands for Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin and one is issued for each megawatt hour of renewable electricity generated.
The more businesses that switch to a green tariff, the higher the demand for it increases and in turn production and supply levels. This will help slow global warming and enable us to find a solution before fossil fuels run out.
Many suppliers now offer green energy at similar, competitive rates to the traditional “brown” energy. You can run a comparison using our quick online quoting tool and compare our green prices instantly.
Alternatively, you can contact a member of the team to discuss green options further email us at advice@energy-direct.co.uk and an expert will respond quickly to help.
Businesses across the UK are suffering from high energy costs, but there is something that can be done to help them use less energy. By optimising the voltage supply to your electrical equipment you can reduce your energy consumption by up to 19%, therefore saving you money, energy, and carbon.
Voltage optimisation (VO) is a transformer-based technology which optimises the incoming supply from the national grid to match the voltage required by equipment at your organisation. UK appliances need 220 volts to operate at an optimum level, the average supplied by the National Grid is 242 volts and we have seen as high as 261 volts!
Installing a Voltage Optimiser will give guaranteed savings as well as increase the longevity of your appliances.
We will provide an estimated saving based on the average voltage supplied by the National Grid and present the expected ROI. A plug-in voltage tester will be sent to the site, which is simply plugged into any power socket. A photo is taken of the Voltage reading and sent back to us along with pictures of
the fuse board, the electricity meter and the area around both of these, which is the most likely location for the VO installation.
Optimiser sizes can range from a small wall-mounted box to the size of a washing machine. The return on investment will then be confirmed and a final proposal locked in. Voltage Optimisers can be purchased outright, or leased on a finance model enabling the savings to start from the first month.
A payment of 50% is required. The kit is then ordered and a delivery and installation date are set. The final balance is due a week before delivery. The kit is then installed, commissioned and signed off by client and the savings begin!
By installing a voltage optimiser, you can reduce the voltage supply to your equipment, securing substantial energy savings and extending the lifespan of your electrical assets. Immediate savings on electricity costs will be realised and the typical breakeven point is between 15 - 18 months.
